We’re excited to share something our newest offering at Sur Coffee, Guji Uraga Neja, a radiant and traceable lot from the highlands of Ethiopia’s revered Guji Zone. This vibrant cup comes to us via the incredible work of Neja Fadil, a producer and entrepreneur helping redefine quality and traceability in one of the world’s most iconic coffee-growing regions.
From the Highlands of Tobitu Tuta
Sourced from the small village of Tobitu Tuta in Uraga Woreda, this coffee is grown at an impressive 2150 meters above sea level. The high altitude, cool climate, and rich soil of the region offer the perfect recipe for slow cherry development, leading to sweet, complex flavor profiles.
Neja Fadil’s wet mill, established in 2017, has become a vital hub for coffee in the area, collecting cherries from over 250 smallholder farmers - 45 of whom contributed to this specific lot. Though coffee farming is a relatively new pursuit for many in Tobitu Tuta, Neja's vision and leadership are quickly putting the area on the map.
A Flavor Journey You’ll Want to Experience
Neja’s processing methods speak to both tradition and intentionality: cherries are hand-collected, then fermented for 36–48 hours, and finally dried on raised beds for 9–10 days. This meticulous care brings out a cup that’s sparkling with citrus, floral complexity, and silky sweetness - a profile that captures the very essence of Ethiopian highland coffee.
A Story of Passion and Progress
What makes this launch even more meaningful is the story behind the coffee. Neja began his career as a coffee collector, working on commission before taking the leap to build his own washing station. A former local footballer (yes, really!), he’s now a driving force in expanding local coffee production and training smallholders on agronomy and quality.
This isn’t just about a single coffee. It’s about community, resilience, and a growing movement toward transparency and excellence in Ethiopian coffee.
Why Traceability Matters
Coffee from Ethiopia can be complex to navigate due to the country’s unique and evolving export systems from the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) to Cooperative Unions and Private Farms. What sets this coffee apart is that it offers full traceability from Neja’s station all the way to your cup. In an industry where that’s not always guaranteed, it’s a major win for quality and accountability.
