Job Title: Roaster/Wholesale Manager

Location: San Diego, CA (on site)

Job Summary:

We are seeking a self motivated, organized, and systems oriented person who loves coffee, and has an entrepreneurial temperament. This role will involve developing, leading, and managing the day to day operations of the Sur Coffee roasting and wholesale program. This individual will not only have the knowledge and skill to be able to perform every production task at the highest level of efficiency, but they will also be responsible for creating efficient systems and teams to manage and grow our entire roasting and wholesale operation. The ideal candidate will have a unique blend of leadership and entrepreneurial strengths, along with prior experience with creating or managing inventory systems. Prior coffee industry or roasting experience a plus, but not required.

Key Responsibilities:

Roasting Operations

  • Intimate knowledge of company roasting equipment and function
  • Roasting on a weekly basis/roast-profile maintenance
  • Profiling/working with the team to profile all new coffees
  • Close communication with manufacturer tech support for troubleshooting/repair
  • Machine and equipment maintenance
  • Sample roasting - operations, machine maintenance, sample logging and documentation
  • Understanding roast profile software
  • Continued education (roasting classes/cupping/conventions etc)

Green planning/ inventory

  • Weekly inventory/ordering of green coffee supply for all production facilities.
  • Working with green coffee buyers and importers to assess/ reserve inventory for the year/ keeping green coffee inventory spreadsheet updated.
  • Long term blend maintenance (assessing current or newly sampled coffees to keep blends consistent and keep reserve inventory stocked)
  • Direct trades sampling - sampling and assessing all new coffees to help inform coffee buying strategy for the year
  • Keeping company updated on coffee inventory lifespan/ prepping for next release
  • Working with the marketing and design team to prepare for new coffee launches (getting tasting notes, labels printed, inventory in stock for launch date, etc.)

Quality control

  • Weekly team cupping of all offerings to keep coffees and profiles updated
  • Working directly with cafe management on blend and quality maintenance/ feedback
  • Addressing quality issues from wholesale account/ customer feedback.

Order fulfillment

  • Managing and holding the team accountable to all weekly order fulfillment for cafes, wholesale, and online store/subscriptions.
  • Troubleshooting systematic issues to improve the program and avoid misses.
  • R&D into ways to scale and improve shipping and direct fulfillment etc.
  • Non-roasting operations inventory
  • Managing Cold Brew production and kegging operations/ efficiency/ cleaning/order fulfillment
  • Supply inventory and equipment maintenance (kegs, grinders, brewers, etc)
  • Weekly inventory on all non coffee supplies (packaging, labels, tape etc)
  • Production van basic maintenance (oil changes, tire life etc)

Wholesale Account Management

  • Point of contact for all wholesale customer accounts
  • Responsible for making sure all wholesale orders come in on time (before Tuesday evening each week) from all wholesale clients, including sending reminders to ensure production has enough time to complete orders in time for weekly delivery/pick up.
  • All accounts must receive one phone call per week on Monday. If they do not pick up, then a text message reminder to put in orders before Tuesday must be sent. (We want to ensure long engaging relationships with our clients, not just digital and text transactional relationships)
  • Intimate knowledge of all coffee offerings, profiles, and prices.
  • Responsible for updating clients on new single origin and any other coffee offerings, setting up in-person sampling/ tasting meetings to upsell customers on new offerings.
  • Assisting new clients with online ordering account setup for weekly ordering.
  • Working with the finance department for regular monitoring and updating of pricing for new/updated coffees in Shopify.
  • For the select few clients who order via text, the wholesale manager must receive and place those orders through the production team as well as invoice those clients via square.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in coffee roasting in a commercial setting.
  • Strong understanding of coffee varieties, origins, and roasting techniques.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot roasting equipment.
  • Excellent sensory skills, with the ability to evaluate and adjust roast profiles based on taste, aroma, and appearance.
  • Knowledge of cupping protocols and coffee quality standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality products.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs and stand for extended periods is a requirement.

Salary Range: $66,560 - $75,000
